My Pet Earthquake

Been meaning to post this for a while. Back in June we hosted an earthquake monitoring device (EMD) in our yard for the Nevada Seismological Lab.

They sent us the following info from the data the EMD collected:

053108-earthquake The Nevada Seismological Laboratory would like to thank you for your assistance in this experiment.  There were over 200 people who volunteered to open their homes to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory and permit a seismic recorder on their property.  This allowed us to pick select locations that would give the best coverage of the Reno/Sparks area.

Your home was one of over 60 that hosted seismic recorders or seismographs.  These seismographs are designed to record the vertical motion due to the earthquake events such as the May 31, 2008 Magnitude 3.1 earthquake at 2:09AM.  Enclosed is a seismogram showing 10 seconds after the start of the earthquake.

The first evidence of the earthquake at your location occurs at about 2 seconds after it occurred.  This primary wave or P-wave is followed by a shear wave or S-wave at about 4 seconds after the earthquake.  The S-wave is the large peaks on the seismogram and the cause of the shaking that occurs during an earthquake.  The shaking continues during the remaining time on the seismogram.

We hope that we can depend on you to help in further experiments in the Reno/Sparks that will help the Nevada Seismological Laboratory determine how the Truckee Meadows geologic basin will react to earthquakes.

Thank you,
